Kateryna Koltsova-Tlusta
Kateryna Koltsova-Tlusta was born in 1971 in Kiev in Ukraine where she attended a school for the visually impaired. It was her greatest wish to study singing but with her disability it was impossible to do this in her home country. She therefore studied at the University of Culture in Kiev a related subject, which was Music Folklore. Her special area of studying was the music of Western Ukraine. In 1994 she came to study in Prague where she got a chance to study singing at the Jan Deyl Conservatory in the Lesser Town area.
From the beginning of her staying in the Czech Republic she has had performances, own concerts and she has also appeared with the Spiritual Quintet, with Vladimír Merta and many others. In 1998 she performed in the film called Hamsa. In 2000 the Czech director Martin Pátek made a documentary film about her life called Kackele. Also in 2000 she recorded with a composer Milan Steigerwald and the group Hungerdner Künstler a CD of Jewish songs entitled Yedid Nefesh. On this CD there are songs in Jiddish, Ladino and Hebrew in contemporary arrangement.
In 2000 she attended the Festival of Sephardic Culture, Esperansa 2000, in Sofia, Bulgaria, where she also had several concerts.
She does not intend to return to Ukraine because she is married to the Czech now. Their wedding took place at the Old-New Synagogue on Sunday, 24.10.1999. She became a member of the Prague Jewish Community. In June 2001 was born their daughter Debora, she is the most beautiful infant in the world of course.
In 2003 she recorded another CD entitled Karev jom - Close is the day. It contains Jewish religious songs in Hebrew.
In 2003 she also took part in the Klezfest Festival in Kiev in Ukraine. It was a very rewarding experience where she had an opportunity to attend various workshops on Jewish music.
In the future she wants to concentrate mainly on Jewish music.
